- APR
- Air-purifying respirator. Relies on a suitable filter or cartridge and adequate ambient oxygen; not suitable for IDLH atmospheres.
- AS/NZS
- Australian/New Zealand Standard. Applicability depends on jurisdiction, adoption and the plant's design basis.
- Consequence analysis
- Assessment of the potential outcomes of credible loss-of-containment scenarios using defined assumptions.
- CUI
- Corrosion under insulation. Hidden deterioration of pipework or equipment beneath thermal insulation.
- Emergency ventilation
- Ventilation intended to control or remove a hazardous release under defined alarm and operating conditions.
- ERP
- Emergency response plan. Site-specific arrangements, roles, triggers and actions for emergencies.
- Gas detection
- Instrumentation used to detect ammonia and initiate alerts or safety functions at defined set points.
- IDLH
- Immediately dangerous to life or health. An atmosphere posing an immediate threat to life, irreversible adverse health effects or impaired ability to escape. Entry requires properly selected positive-pressure SCBA or supplied-air equipment with auxiliary SCBA.
- LFL
- Lower flammable limit. Lowest concentration in air at which a flammable mixture can propagate flame under specified conditions.
- LOTO
- Lockout/tagout. Control of hazardous energy using verified isolation and appropriate locking arrangements.
- MOC
- Management of change. Formal review and control of changes that may affect process safety.
- NH₃
- Ammonia. Chemical formula for the refrigerant also identified as R717.
- P&ID
- Piping and instrumentation diagram. Depicts process equipment, pipework and instrumentation relationships.
- PSI
- Process safety information. Controlled information on hazards, plant design, operating limits and protective systems.
- PSM
- Process safety management. Integrated controls to prevent and mitigate loss of containment and major accidents.
- PSV
- Pressure safety valve. A pressure-relief device protecting against defined overpressure scenarios.
- R717
- Refrigerant designation for ammonia.
- SCBA
- Self-contained breathing apparatus. Supplies breathing air independently of the surrounding atmosphere.
- STEL
- Short-term exposure limit. Generally assessed over a specified short averaging period, commonly 15 minutes.
- TWA
- Time-weighted average. Average airborne concentration over a specified reference period, commonly eight hours.
- VOC
- Verification of competency. Evidence-based evaluation that a person can carry out specified work safely.
- WES
- Workplace exposure standard. Regulatory or published occupational airborne exposure benchmark applicable to a jurisdiction.
