It is also toxic and can be flammable at high concentrations, so systems require sound engineering, competent operation, maintenance and emergency planning.

How dangerous is ammonia refrigerant?

Ammonia can injure the eyes, skin and respiratory system. The seriousness of exposure depends on concentration, duration and conditions. A release can also create visibility, pressure, cold-burn and, in some circumstances, fire or explosion hazards.
